The problem

Not sure what you'll actually receive on maternity leave?

Maternity income doesn't stay the same. It can move through several stages, each paid differently — and Child Benefit can shift with your household earnings too.

Good to know

Common maternity pay questions, answered simply.

How do I calculate my maternity leave pay?

Maternity leave pay usually comes in stages. If your employer offers an enhanced package, you may receive full or partial pay for a period, followed by six weeks at 90% of your average weekly earnings, then Statutory Maternity Pay for up to 33 weeks. Some parents also have unpaid weeks. Maternity Pay Planner works through each stage automatically using current England rules and shows the estimated household total for every month of your leave.

How much will I get on maternity leave?

Statutory Maternity Pay pays 90% of your average weekly earnings for the first six weeks. After that, you'll get the lower of 90% of your average weekly earnings or the current statutory weekly amount for up to 33 more weeks. If your employer tops this up, your monthly income will be higher during those weeks. The paid report shows the exact monthly figure across your leave.

How much should I save before maternity leave?

A good starting point is the difference between your usual household income and your estimated income during maternity leave, minus anything already set aside. Maternity Pay Planner turns that gap into a single monthly savings target running up to the end of the month before your due date — a realistic amount you can act on.
